Nigeria’s cybersecurity conversation has moved from warnings to action. The National Information Technology Development Agency launched a national cybersecurity awareness campaign on 1 October 2026, and regulators have also been investigating data breaches earlier this year.
Breaches affect ordinary people too. Company records, bank details and personal information can end up in the wrong hands, and an attacker often only needs one weak password to start.
What NITDA launched
NITDA launched the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month campaign on 1 October 2026 and called for collective action. The report we checked did not confirm the campaign’s full dates, so check NITDA’s official channels for the schedule.
Recent breaches under investigation
BusinessDay reported on 20 April 2026 that a breach at the Corporate Affairs Commission put more than 15 million company documents at risk. Daily Trust reported on 5 June 2026 that the Nigeria Data Protection Commission was probing 1,369 firms over data breaches.
How to protect your accounts
Use a different password for your bank and email accounts. Turn on the extra login step that your bank and email provider offer. Never share a one time code with anyone, including someone who says they are calling from your bank. Check your transfer alerts as soon as they arrive, and report anything suspicious to your bank straight away.
A reused password or a shared code is often all an attacker needs to reach your money.
If you use fintech apps, our guide to the best fintech companies in Nigeria can help you compare the options. Turn on the extra login step on your bank and email accounts today, before you need it.
