ChatGPT or Gemini Which Is Better for Students

Grace Blessed2 min read50

For most Nigerian students, Gemini gives more for free, including image generation, Deep Research and access to NotebookLM. ChatGPT is a strong choice if you prefer its conversational style, and its paid Go plan adds more file uploads and data analysis. Google also announced a free 12 month AI Pro offer for eligible university students in Nigeria in October 2025, though we could not confirm it is still open. Prices and features in this guide were checked on official pages on 23 October 2026, and CMA9ja will update them as plans change.

Students often pick a tool because a classmate uses it. The better test is which one gets your coursework right with the least correction.

Compare the free plans

Gemini’s free plan includes image generation and Deep Research, with compute based limits instead of a fixed message count. It also gives access to NotebookLM Standard. ChatGPT’s free plan covers everyday text chat, while its Go plan raises the limits on images, file uploads and data analysis. Neither official page states exact free caps, so test them on your own work.

Compare the paid plans

Gemini’s paid plans are AI Plus at $4.99 a month, AI Pro at $19.99 a month and AI Ultra from $99.99 a month. ChatGPT’s main paid plan, Plus, costs $20 a month. We did not find a current student offer from OpenAI on its official pages. All these prices are in US dollars, so check the naira price inside each app before you pay.

Choose the tool for the task

  • Research from your own notes: Gemini with NotebookLM.
  • Explaining a difficult topic: either tool, followed by a request for a worked example.
  • Working with data files: ChatGPT Go or Plus, because its data analysis limits are higher.
  • Images for presentations: Gemini’s free plan includes image generation.

Test both on the same assignment

Give both tools the same question from one of your course units. Compare the accuracy, the clarity of the explanation and how many corrections you had to make. Keep the tool that needs the fewest corrections for the work you actually do.

The better tool is the one that gets your coursework right with the least correction, not the one with the longest feature list.

Pick one assignment this week and run it through both tools. Then keep a note of which one you used and why, so you can repeat the test next semester. For more guides on AI tools, visit CMA9ja.
