The Honjo International Scholarship 2027 supports international students in Japanese graduate schools. It provides a monthly stipend for Master’s and PhD programmes.
This private foundation award is open to all nationalities. You can apply directly without university nomination.
Honjo International Scholarship 2027 Benefits
Winners receive a monthly allowance based on the degree length. For 1-2 year degrees it is ¥230,000. For 3-year degrees it is ¥210,000. Longer programmes get ¥180,000 per month.
The scholarship covers the minimum period needed to finish the degree. It does not include tuition or flights in all cases, but the stipend is generous.
Eligibility
You must be a non-Japanese citizen. Apply for or already be accepted to a Master’s or PhD programme starting in April or autumn 2027 at a Japanese graduate school.
Master’s applicants must start by age 30. PhD applicants by age 35. The remaining study period must exceed 12 months. Basic Japanese conversation ability is required. Interviews are in Japanese.
Expected Timeline
Applications opened on 1 September 2026 and close on 31 October 2026. Document screening results come on 31 January 2027. Interviews are planned for early February 2027. Final results are announced by 31 March 2027.

Confirm eligibility on the official Honjo site. Then use the online application system at entry.hisf.or.jp. Upload documents and a 2-minute research video. Save the application PDF.
